International Committee
The Rotary Club of Uxbridge is proud to be part of the global network of Rotary International, an organization dedicated to creating lasting change in communities around the world. In doing so the Club has mirrored the efforts of Rotary International with recent projects by dedicating time and resources to the areas of focus as identified by Rotary International: Basic education and Literacy, Peace Building, Conflict Prevention, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Maternal and Child Health, Community Economic development, Environmental Action and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
Through these efforts, Rotary continues to build stronger, healthier, and more compassionate communities both locally and globally.
One of Rotary’s most significant international initiatives is the fight to eradicate polio. Since launching the PolioPlus program in 1985, Rotary and its global partners have helped reduce worldwide polio cases by more than 99 percent. What once paralyzed an estimated 285,000 people each year has now been reduced to only a small number of cases in a few remaining endemic regions. The Rotary Club of Uxbridge proudly contributes annually to the PolioPlus initiative, helping provide vaccines, medical support, and resources to frontline health workers committed to ending polio forever. Contributions made by Rotary clubs are further amplified through the support of the Gates Foundation which continues to match Rotary’s fundraising efforts.
For many years The Rotary Club of Uxbridge has led District Grants focusing on supporting Malawi Teen Clubs through the Emmanuel International organization. These teen clubs support HIV positive youth, providing vital emotional, social, and medical support for young people living with HIV. The Rotary Club of Uxbridge has provided additional funding to sustain existing clubs’ projects while continuing to establish new ones.

Malawi Teen Clubs
The Rotary Club of Uxbridge has worked with Canadian NGOs on the ground in Malawi for over 20 years. The goal has been the remediation of the HIV pandemic and the ultimate achievement of an HIV-free generation.
Canadian based research has established that an HIV-positive individual who maintains a regimen of Antiretrovirals (ARVs) will not only live a long and normal life, they will not transmit the disease. Thus, the underlying goal is the testing and treatment of all affected individuals.
Malawi remains one of the countries hardest hit by the HIV pandemic, with adolescents and young people accounting for nearly 50% of new HIV infections. This demographic represents a growing share of people living with HIV globally, and poses unique challenges for healthcare providers. Adolescents living with HIV often struggle with treatment adherence, are at higher risk of antiretroviral treatment failure, and face social and psychological pressures linked to their developmental stage.
To respond to these needs, a Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD) model known as the Teen Club was introduced. Teen Clubs are adolescent-friendly support groups designed for ALHIV aged 10 to 19 years, who are fully disclosed of their HIV status. These clubs, held on weekends, offer a comprehensive package of services including psychosocial counselling, sexual and reproductive health education, clinical services, ARV refills, and child protection awareness. Clubs are managed by trained healthcare workers from the Ministry of Health (MOH), and foster peer support while promoting positive health outcomes.
In 2025, the Teen Club project was expanded to Zomba District, targeting five health facilities: Mwandama, Naisi, Maera, Machinjiri, and Namadidi. Funding forth expansion was provided by a Rotary Foundation District Grant led by RC Uxbridge. The grant was supported by donations from clubs throughout the District.
A District Grant add an additional 3 clubs in 2026 has been approved. An application to add 4 more clubs in 2027 has been submitted.
